What is Lomi Lomi Massage?

The Hawaiian word ‘lomi’ means to kneed, rub, or to soothe. Lomi Lomi Massage was originally practiced by medicine people in Hawaii and was handed down through generations. Each family had their own style and approach to this treatment and Lomi Lomi was introduced to the greater world by Auntie Margaret Machado in the 1970’s. Lomi Lomi integrates long strokes, full-body strokes, and at times, more than one area of the body will be massaged simultaneously. It is flowing-style massage.

What to Expect in a Session

Coconut oil is typically used in this massage. Draping is minimal at some points of the massage to facilitate full-body-length work and strokes. Depending on the presenting concerns and the client’s preferences, light to firm pressure is applied throughout the massage. Hip stretches may also be applied to loosen the low back and gluteal muscles.
